Mike, I also noticed that your Heddon Frog was for sale twice and incurred considerably more aging in the 2 weeks between sales. Do I have that right, or do you actually have 2 Heddon Frogs?

Mike, I understand that you are also the owner of the folk art Pfeffer Sunfish recently for sale. By any chance did the Sunfish and Frog come from the same source?

Mike, what you also must know, is one of the early magazines (I don't recall which ....Outers or Field and Stream, etc.) actually did a story back in the 1920's I think (Correct me if I'm wrong on the time period) on the original Heddon frog, and they had a contest on who could make the best copy or replica back then! So, there could easily be some frogs that look very close to an original, and are nearly 100 years old, but are not original Heddon Frogs. Bottom line, from a collector standpoint, no matter anyone says, the ONLY ones that will ever be of high value and known to be original Heddon frogs from Heddon, are those that have provenance directly back to the Heddon factory archive board, from which they all came. Nothing will every change that unless someone finds one with absolute provenance back to the Heddon factory or family.

This is an interesting conversation. A quick internet search turns up lots of pics of fake Heddon Frogs. Since 1999 I've probably seen 50 of them myself. While I have my own opinion on the bait in question, I'm curious as to how you can verify a 100 year old smell (insert joke here...).

I know you can test paint (without harming the lure) and compare the elemental results with what is known about paints produced during the era in question. I would think that has this process would be quite necessary to prove the authenticity of a $100K lure. Mike is that something you plan on doing?

I'll post a few fake Frog pics collected from around the Interwebs for comprehension.

Thanks for the constructive conversation, looking forward to more friendly exchanges.

Here are the 2 I have. I clearly state that there are 8 frogs. These both have full documentation.

I've been collecting Heddons since 1989. I have personally seen or held 4 of the 8 frogs from the factory board. I currently have 2 of them in my safe deposit box for sale on consignment. The Heddon frog is one of If not the single most counterfitted fishing lures in the history of this hobby. Yours is one of them and your story is the same as every guy that ever had a bad one.
The eyes are wrong.
The brass pin in the back is wrong.
The paint is wrong.
It has been falsely aged. The rust is new, not old. The hooks are wrong.
The hardware is wrong.
The proportions are wrong.

If someone sold that to you as an authentic Heddon frog, they should be ashamed of themselves. I've seen 50 fakes in my lifetime and yours isn't even one of the better fakes.

I wish you the very best of luck with your frog. This will be my last post in regards to your bait.

Joe....I'm a aerospace machinist for the past 15 years working with all types of metals. I am currently a supervisor at smith and wesson. I know a lot about rust and this rust is easily 100 years old. The paint is 100 years old and the smell is 100 years old. I've been a heddon collector and seller for 5 years and have seen plenty of fakes. This my friends came out of a high and collection from someone who died on the Great Lakes from the Springfield Ohio antique extraviganza. I can assure you I'm holding something I'm over 90% sure is the real deal....

It's a 100% fake, made to look old. You do not need to reach out to anyone for any information regarding this oneā€¦.

Wow, I've seen a million copies, but yours has some patina. Only a few ever carved by the man. Bring it to a show. You would have access to a lot of opinions.
