Taking hooks off lures for display and/or sale

Frank Prokop	There is an increasing and worrying trend in Australia to remove the hooks from lures for display and sale. Australian lure collecting has greatly expanded in the last decade (See photo of my books on the subject), with some lures achieving sales of over $3,500A for a lure produced only 20 years ago (the Newell Thumbprint Kadaitcha - 47 produced) See photo. As prices increase - so have copies/fakes, and several have been identified through incorrect split rings or different hooks. I would appreciate comments as to whether removing hooks constitutes more than 20% modification and how this should be dealt with. As more sales are being made on lure related web sites, I am concerned that people are paying a premium for 'lure bodies' and not lures. I would appreciate the thoughts of people experienced in the area as I will be writing a column in Freshwater Fishing Australia on the matter in the near future.

Les Ozimkowski	I'm with Steve on this one. Hooks do get replaced on occasion, usually when the older lures lose their barbs. As long as they are carefully replaced with the same vintage hardware and remain secure in their re-installation, I do not think they lose much value at all.

Steve Buturlia	I want the original hooks on my lures. I can't fathom putting a lure on display with no hooks. I wouldn't scrutinize someone for replacing hooks if they were the correct style and make as the original. IMHO a lure with no hooks is worth considerably less than the same quality lure with the original hooks.

Chance Dunlap	no reason to remove the hooks. In the U.S. and Canada nobody would remove the hooks from lures. some collectors do put little pieces of clear plastic tubing over the points. If I find an old lure with no hooks, I try to replace them with the correct period type.
