I am a new member and a new collector. I plan on attending one of the shows this year and have some questions. Where can you buy lures? In the rooms or in the show? Can you bring lures to trade? Do you have an appraisal desk, like they due at the Decoy shows? Why are your shows in such obscure places instead of large cities. I live in Chicago and had never heard of Effingham, Illinois. Wouldn't you get more attendance in the suburban cities of place like Chicago, New York, St. Louis, etc. ? I look forward to your advice. Thanks. Mike

Hi Mike,

Glad to have you in The Club. Sounds like you're actively looking to add / trade and NFLCC sponsored shows are the best for doing that. Room trading usually begins a couple days prior to the show. Essentially, you can walk the hotel halls from mid morning to well into the evening and guys will prop their doors open and you can just walk in and find all kinds of different lures, reels, rods, decoys and other general sporting collectibles strewn on the beds or set up on tables. You'll usually find a list of trader's rooms posted in the lobby. Everyone is super friendly and I always end up getting into several great conversations. You can walk around and buy / sell / trade or barter. I always end up putting nice lures into my collections from both room trading and the shows. The shows usually take place that Sat or Sun and start in the AM and go until late afternoon. Some guys don't open up for room trading and just set up at the show which is great if you can only make it the day of the show. Regarding appraisals...yes most shows I've been to had an appraisal desk or if you attend room trading you are likely to run into more than a few knowledgeable members willing to offer their IDs / opinions / appraisals. I'm hoping you decide to attend The National Show in Springfield, IL this year. I went to my first National Show in Ft Wayne last year and it was an amazing experience. Drop me an email if you need any help or wanna talk lures... especially if you're looking for an ID on a lure.

Mike, I wish to welcome you to the NFLCC. Most of the shows are Regional Shows. They are held in smaller cities to keep costs down for our members that want to attend. All of these shows have hotel room trading. Lucky for you our National Show is in Springfield, IL. I hope to meet you there or at the National Decoy Show at Pheasant Run this Spring. Also I will be at the Effingham,IL show this Spring. Once you have been to a NFLCC show you will have met some of the best guys and gals in the collecting world.

Mike, welcome to a great organization of fishing tackle collectors. You've asked some excellent questions. Room trading is a good way to get into the spirit of a show with the opportunity to buy, sell, or trade while at the same time meeting other members in a relaxing environment. Room day trading can be long and last well into the night as stories are told about the latest "field find" and good deals are cut. You can reserve tables at the show for selling your items or for just displaying your collection. Always plan to come early and enjoy the room trading. Region 8, Southwest part of the U.S.) has three regional shows with none in a large city, but within easy driving distance of the larger metropolitan areas. Many times the location of a regional show is guided by the location of the member(s) that host the show.

Welcome Mike, glad to have you in our fine group. The shows are great! I think you will learn and enjoy from them. The greatest thing about our club, is the wonderful people you will meet and no better place then our shows. You will find very active room trading in the days leading up to the show. Certainly, buying selling and trading all take place at this time, as well as at the actual show. Some shows have an appraisal desk and some do not. If you attend a show, and they don't have this set up, talk to the show host and I'm sure they will help put you with someone that will be happy to help. As Peter explained, shows are hosted in a variety of cities, both large and small. If you have any other questions or concerns, don't hesitate to ask. You are more then welcome to contact me (Region 4 V.P.) or any of the other club officers, I'm sure you will get the help you seek. Look forward to seeing you at a show!

Also, yes there is an appraisal table right at the front table. Just tell those folks you want your tackle appraised.

The Milwuakee show is coming up in mid-January. Check out the flyer at the Events page. It is one of the largest shows in the nation. Be a great show to meet a bunch of folks, 200+ tables, hundreds of collectors.

Welcome! You can buy/trade during the room trading or on the show floor! My guess as to why most shows are not in big metropolises is the congestion, and costs to book a show /rooms at the mega Hotels? Some shows are really rural and some are in decent size cities. Members are spread out over the entire country with many if not most outside very large cities! Having not run a show for a very long time, I am sure others who have could answer all your concerns! Good luck and enjoy! it is a good bunch or collectors here!
